A STRONG THUNDERSTORM WILL IMPACT CENTRAL MCDOWELL...SOUTHEASTERN MITCHELL AND SOUTHEASTERN YANCEY COUNTIES UNTIL 515 PM EDT...

At 422 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 9 miles northwest of Marion, or near B.R. Parkway-Little Switzerland to Linville, moving east at 10 mph.

Locations to be impacted include...B.R. Parkway-Little Switzerland To Linville, Mount Mitchell State Park, B.R. Parkway-Craggy To Little Switzerland, North Cove, Busick, Pleasant Gardens, Little Switzerland, Woodlawn and Celo.

Wind gusts up to 40 mph, pea size hail and very heavy rainfall rates up to 2 inches per hour will be possible in these areas.

This storm may intensify, so be certain to monitor local radio and tv stations, as well as local cable tv outlets for additional information and possible warnings from the National Weather Service.

Lake James is in the path of this storm. Get away from the water and seek shelter in an interior room in the nearest shelter. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.
