Authorities said Wednesday they charged a Marion man with fleeing from deputies during a warrant service and taking a set of handcuffs with him.

Deputy Bob Green of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged Billy Ray South Jr., 33, of 196 Lester Hollifield Road in Marion, with larceny and escape from custody.

At 1:45 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 23, Green served an outstanding warrant on South for failure to pay child support.

While leaving the magistrate’s office at the courthouse, South fled from the deputy, and a foot chase ensued. Trooper Josh Settlemyre with the N.C. Highway Patrol spotted the suspect on nearby railroad tracks a short time later and apprehended him.

South was charged with larceny of the handcuffs he was wearing when he escaped.

South received a $10,000 bond.
