A federal child porn investigation that spanned many months came to an end Tuesday when Detective Paul Alkire of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Homeland Security agents arrested Carl Jay Whitson, 65, of 2159 Goose Creek Road in Marion, at his residence.

Federal authorities contend that Whitson “knowingly received and attempted to receive child pornography” and “knowingly possessed and accessed with intent to view any material that contained images of child pornography.”

Alkire, who is a specially trained Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Peer to Peer investigator, has been conducting an undercover online investigation of Whitson since January 2015.

In May 2015, Alkire and U.S. Homeland Security agents searched Whitson’s house and seized three computers.

“The computers were turned over to Homeland Security for an in-depth forensic investigation,” said Alkire. “They found child pornography on all three computers.”

Due to the fact that the suspect had received images from multiple states, the case was turned over to federal prosecutors.

The victims in the child porn case ranged from 6-12, and the majority was female.

Whitson remains in federal custody pending trial.
