A Marion man charged in October with stealing another man’s pickup truck was given at least 10 months in prison in McDowell District Court.

Matthew Phillip Baldwin, 31, of Ben Street in Marion was found guilty of larceny of a motor vehicle. He was sentenced to 10 to 21 months in prison. He was given credit for 17 days time served. He must pay $163.66 restitution to the victim.

On Tuesday, Sept. 19, Jeremy Taylor, of Marion, reported that someone stole his 2014 Dodge Ram pickup truck while it was parked at the Pepsi plant on U.S. 221 North.

Taylor reported the theft then called his wife to pick him up. On the way to get her husband, Christine Taylor passed the truck on Jacktown Road. She turned around and followed and spotted the stolen Dodge Ram sitting at a house on Proctors Knob Road.

Further investigation revealed that Baldwin took the truck, which has been recovered, according to the report.

Baldwin has a prior criminal record in McDowell dating back to 2003, with convictions that include larceny and breaking and entering into a currency machine, according to N.C. Department of Public Safety Records.
