At 2:41 Tuesday afternoon, emergency crews from Old Fort Fire Department, N.C. Forest Service, Old Fort Police Department, McDowell EMS, McDowell Rescue Squad, Emergency Management, the N.C. Highway Patrol and assistance from Crooked Creek and Black Mountain fire departments responded to I-40 westbound in response to a string of fires on Old Fort Mountain. According to emergency radio reports, there were calls of up to eight fires, most small in size and one scaling up the mountain. By 3:03 p.m., all fires were under control. Information about the cause wasn’t available Tuesday afternoon.
