Authorities said Wednesday they charged a Marion woman with embezzling thousands of dollars from Bear Creek Marina & Restaurant after a two- year investigation.

Detective J. T. Grindstaff of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged Anna Christine Anderson, 47, of 10 Fern Ave. in Marion, with embezzlement.

In February 2015, Van Samuel Boyd and Joe Hall, who, at that time, were the owners of Bear Creek Marina & Restaurant, on Marina Drive in Marion, reported money missing from their business.

A lengthy investigation led to Anderson, who was the manager. Grindstaff said she had been taking money from the marina’s bank account.

A warrant states that Anderson is accused of embezzling $15,843.03 from the business.

After the investigation and the issuance of charges, authorities were unable to locate the suspect. She was charged on Monday, April 17. She received a written promise to appear in court.

Sheriff’s officials said this is not related to an embezzlement investigation at the marina that began in July 2013. Another former employee was indicted on April 2014 but the case was subsequently dismissed by Financial Crimes Prosecutor Roger Wiles by reason of “prosecutorial discretion.” Wiles told The McDowell News in 2015 that “investigators didn’t have the evidence to prosecute and prove things at a very high level.” No charges were ever filed by deputies against that former employee.
