A Henderson man was arrested and charged after he was spotted stealing tools and change from a Marion man’s car, authorities said Tuesday.

Deputy Steven McPeters of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged John Lee Anstead, 28, of Henderson, with breaking and entering a motor vehicle and larceny.

On Friday, Oct. 13, Justin Carpenter, of Sugar Hill Road, reported that he went outside to his Nissan Xterra to go to work and noticed a man inside of it. The suspect fled from the car with some hand tools and coins.

Carpenter and one of his friends chased the man on foot and were able to recover the victim’s property.

McPeters arrived on the scene and apprehended the suspect, who was identified as Anstead.

Anstead was issued an $11,000 bond.
