Authorities said Monday they arrested a Marion man and charged him with shooting his friend during an argument.
Lt. Andy Manis of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged Carrol William Craig, 37, of 246 Toney Road in Marion, with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
Shortly before 10 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 8, deputies responded to 8 Johnson Drive in Marion in reference to a gunshot wound.
They arrived to find that 29-year-old Steven Lee Johnson, of that address, had been shot in the chest.
Witnesses identified the suspect as Craig. McDowell County sheriff’s deputies located Craig near his home a couple of hours after the shooting and took him into custody.
Manis said that alcohol was involved, and the two, who are reportedly friends, got into a dispute, at which time Craig brandished the gun and shot Johnson.
The victim was airlifted to Mission Hospital in Asheville.
Craig received a $150,000 bond.
