A Marion man registered as a sex offender in Catawba County was arrested and charged for living near a local elementary school, authorities said Monday.

Capt. Shanon Smith of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged Timothy Andrew Ledford, 33, of 5500 Sugar Hill Road in Marion, with a sex offender registry violation.

Ledford is a sex offender registered in Catawba County who was wanted for leaving Catawba and failing to advise the Sheriff’s Office there.

On Thursday, Feb. 22, McDowell sheriff’s deputies went to the Sugar Hill Road residence and arrested Ledford on the outstanding warrant. While there, they discovered he had been living near West Marion Elementary School.

By law, registered sex offenders aren’t allowed to reside within 1,000 feet of a school or day care.

Ledford is currently being held in Catawba County on his outstanding charge, where he will subsequently be served on this latest charge in McDowell.
