Find a show with heart this weekend

Shovels and Rope will be at The Orange Peel for a two night gig tonight and Saturday.

I normally make what I like to call a “concert friend” during live shows.

My concert friend is usually a person standing in line beside of me looking for someone to talk to during the wait.

During last Saturday’s Nikki Lane show at the Grey Eagle in Asheville, my concert friend was dressed in head-to-toe rockabilly wear.

I started our conversation.

“Have you seen Nikki Lane before?”

Her eyes lit up and she shared that her 10-year-old daughter had sung with Lane two years before after being brought on the stage by the songstress. And that she had seen Lane several times.

The line started moving and my new acquaintance moved ahead while sharing with me that  “this would be the best show I had seen” and that Lane “had a way of making you feel at home” during her shows.

She was right. Lane and her family made the whole evening a swinging event with several tender moments on stage.

At one point, Lane and her mother shared a duet about a daughter making mistakes and needing her mother for strength, which pulled at the crowd’s heartstrings. In fact, a few trace tears could be seen flowing down Momma Lane’s face.

A lighter moment during the show was when Lane yelled “Deddy, come get your dog off stage!” When the pooch decided to take the stage with Lane before the start of a song.

The way Lane, her family and band interacted made the huge audience feel as though they were sharing something really special, something completely genuine that was filled with soul and heart.

If you ever have a chance to catch the dark-haired singer, do. Her concert will be something I always remember.
