During the week of Feb. 11, 1978, Steven Alexander Parks was notified that he had been appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. Parks, 17, was the son of Mort H. Parks of Marion and Mary D. Parks of Old Fort. A senior at McDowell High, Parks would be sworn in as a midshipman on July 6, 1978 and would graduate with the class of 1982. He received the appointment as a result of four nominations which included U.S. Sens. Robert Morgan and Jesse Helms, U.S. Rep. Lamar Gudger and the NJROTC.
