A longtime employee of a local orthodontist has turned herself in to authorities after being accused of embezzling from the doctor.

According to Sgt. Rick Gutierrez of the Marion Police Department, Tammy Davis Gurley, 45, of Wesley Road in Morganton surrendered to authorities on Friday.

She has been charged with five counts of embezzlement.

On Tuesday, Marion police asked for the public’s help in locating Gurley, believing that she could be in the Raleigh area.

Gutierrez said Gurley had been an employee of Dr. Christopher Nevant since 1999. According to Nevant, he started noticing some inconsistencies in the daily deposits. Gutierrez stated evidence at this time is showing the amount she allegedly took could reach several thousand dollars.

Gurley was in charge of the daily deposits and insurance claims. The case is still an ongoing investigation, according to the detective.

Gurley was booked at the McDowell County Jail under $150,000 secured bond.
