An 11-year-old boy was hurt Tuesday evening when he was hit by a vehicle on U.S. 70 West.

At 7:49 p.m., McDowell EMS, the P.G. Fire Department and the McDowell County Rescue Squad responded to an area near Liberty Church Road where they found Daniel McCall, 11, suffering from serious injuries after being hit by a car.

Sgt. Gail Cagle, of the N.C. Highway Patrol, told The McDowell News on Wednesday that a vehicle driven by a 15-year-old female was travelling east on U.S. 70 West when McCall ran from the westbound shoulder into the side of the vehicle.

Cagle said McCall had been running through the woods from his residence on Ab Elliott Road, approximately a mile and a-half from where he was struck. Cagle declined to comment on why the child had left his residence.

EMS reports state McCall was transported to Mission Trauma Center by ambulance with serious injuries. McCall’s aunt, Amanda Smith, said Wednesday in an email that her nephew suffered a shattered nose, a broken arm, a possible broken leg, a fractured spine and a cut along the left side of his face.

“He snuck out the back door before his dad knew it and ran up the road,” she said. “He was trying to cross the road and didn’t see the car coming. We are all praying he recovers well.”

Cagle said the driver of the vehicle was not injured and no charges will be filed against her.
