The McDowell High School Student Council class and DECA club are hosting the third annual Mr. MHS Pageant on Saturday, Dec. 9 at East McDowell Middle School.

This special, all-male pageant will raise money for two wonderful families in the community. This pageant is an incredible display of students coming together to help others. One of the most unique factors of this pageant is that it is a student-run event.

The Mr. MHS Pageant began three years ago in an effort to help raise funds for families within the school community that have suffered a great loss or are dealing with major medical issues. The pageant is a way for our students to give back to the community monetarily, while also providing some comic relief.

Contestants will compete in two “wears” as well as a talent competition. Contestants will receive awards in the following categories: People’s Choice, Mr. Sexy Legs, Mr. Money Maker, Family’s Choice, Mr. Congeniality, and Mr. MHS. Mr. MHS is voted on by four judges from the school system.

This year’s judges will be Miranda Ferguson, Myra Morgan, Joe Cash and Mark Garrett. Each contestant must raise at least $200 in order to participate, and an award is given to the young man who raises the most money.

This year, the contestants’ female escorts are also raising at least $50 to participate. All proceeds go directly to the honored families. This year’s honorees will be the Tammy Comer family and the Sarah Wills family.

Tickets are $12 and children 5 and under are free. Monetary donations are still being accepted. Checks can be made to MHS and sent to Alison Garrett, 600 McDowell High Road, Marion, NC 28752.

Donations from individuals and businesses in the community for raffle baskets are also being accepted at this time. Their goal is to raise at least $12,000 this year.

 About the Tammy Comer Family

Tammy Comer is the mother of Madison Comer. Madison is a junior at McDowell High School. In 2010, Tammy was diagnosed with Stage I Breast Cancer. She underwent surgery and radiation at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. In 2013, her cancer returned. Tammy underwent multiple surgeries, various types of chemotherapy and additional radiation treatments. In October 2016, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer. The cancer had spread to various parts of her body, forcing her to retire from teaching. Currently, Tammy is on a variety of chemotherapy drugs to manage the cancer. With the support of her amazing family and friends, she continues to live each day to the fullest.

 About the Sarah Wills Family

Sarah Wills is the wife of Chris Wills and the mother of Madison, Peyton and Christian Wills. Madison is a sophomore at McDowell High School and Peyton is a sixth grader at West Middle School. On July 26, Sarah gave birth to a happy, healthy baby boy, Christian James Wills at Mission Hospital. After a few weeks the family noticed that he continuously had a distended stomach and gas. Numerous doctors’ visits later, they took him to the emergency room. He had a biopsy for Hirschsprungs, which came back negative. On the evening of September 12, Christian was rushed to the hospital where he underwent emergency exploratory surgery. They found that he had twisted bowels. A second surgery was performed two days later to remove about half of the dead tissue. The following week, he had his third surgery to connect his intestines and to place a central IV line and feeding tube. Christian is still in the hospital and has had numerous other difficulties with breathing, high temperatures, and fluid in his abdomen. His condition is extremely rare and they are continuing to search for doctors across the country that are experts in this area.

The MHS Student Council and DECA club would like to thank the following businesses who have donated financially or have given items to be included in our raffle baskets. The McDowell High School Student Council and DECA club appreciate your donation.
