As much as 7-8 inches of snow fell on McDowell County Friday night and Saturday morning, making traveling hazardous and causing scattered power outages.

And bone-chilling cold is on the way.

According to a 9:30 a.m. Saturday situation report from McDowell County Emergency Services Director William Kehler, emergency workers assisted numerous stranded drivers overnight, but traffic was flowing on Old Fort Mountain's I-40 section.

At 9:50 a.m., Duke Energy reported 187 customers without power in McDowell. Kehler said power was out at one point at Blue Ridge Terrace apartments, but had been restored at the retirement community.

A wind chill advisory remains in effect from 7 p.m. Saturday until noon Sunday with wind chill values as low as 12 below zero.
