Wanda Hyder and Laura Beam were honored Tuesday by the Marion City Council as the Citizens of the Month for March. They were selected for this honor by Councilwoman Ann Harkey.

Hyder and Beam are the owners of the Magic Act, located at 35 W. Court St. Hyder first came to work at the business (at that time called the Silhouette Salon) in 1966 as a young woman just out of beautician school. Two years later, Beam came on board as a new beautician. Another two years later, the two bought the business together and have owned and operated it ever since.

When they got started running the salon, Hyder and Beam changed the name to the Magic Act and received guidance from Doris Hill on the ins and outs of running a business. Over the years, they have built up a devoted clientele and the Magic Act received the Small Business of the Year Award in 2004 as well as being chosen in 2002 as a model for the McDowell High School Career Training Program. The Magic Act offers full service for men, women and children including hair cutting and coloring, beard trimming, waxing, artistic shellac for nails and therapeutic massages.

At Tuesday’s meeting, they were joined by many of their long-time clients as they received this honor. Hyder and Beam were given certificates and Marion mugs by Mayor Steve Little.
