MHS students head to international DECA conference

Seven students from McDowell High School will attend the DECA ICDC International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Anaheim, Calif. next week.

There will be about 19,000 students participating at this event.

Three students, Alice Landaverdy, Taylor Buchanan and Jacob Whitson will be competing in the Community Service Project, showcasing the second annual Mr. MHS Pageant that took place in December.

Two students, Nicole Gallion and Alex Rocha are competing in the Buying and Merchandising Team Decision Making Event. And, Ciera Williams and Rylee Parsons will be participating in the leadership development conference, IGNITE.

The students will leave on Tuesday, April 25 and will return on Sunday, April 30.

More than 10,000 DECA members demonstrate their college and career knowledge and skills by participating in DECA’s Competitive Events Program. They are finalists from their chartered associations hoping to be named an international champion. DECA’s International Career Development Conference supports education initiatives such as career clusters, national curriculum standards, 21st century skills, common core state standards, project-based learning and personal financial literacy.
