Political newcomer files for the County Commission

On Wednesday, a political newcomer filed to run for the McDowell County Commission.

Paula Swepson Avery, 53, of 220 West Grayson St. in Marion filed Wednesday as a Democratic candidate for the commission.

She is a challenger and this is her first attempt at seeking elected office. She is the coordinator of the West Marion Community Forum, according to information from the McDowell County Board of Elections.

Three seats on the McDowell County Commission are up for election this year. They are held by Republican incumbents David Walker, Tony Brown and Matthew Crawford.

As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, Avery was the only person to file as a candidate that day in McDowell.

The filing period started at noon on Monday and will continue until noon on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
