A suspect is charged with reckless homicide after a 20-month-old child with connections to Danville, Va., died from breathing complications in Wisconsin last week.
The child, Avery J. Edwards, and his family are originally from Danville, Capt. Terri Hook with the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office told the Register & Bee on Wednesday afternoon.
At 6:24 p.m. Friday, deputies received a 911 call about Edwards’ breathing becoming very shallow, according to an Oneida County Sheriff’s Office news release.
The child was transported to the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield, Wisconsin, before dying, the release continued.
Ellen L. Tran, 28, of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, is charged with second-degree reckless homicide in the death of the child.
No further details on the investigation were available Wednesday.
A statement posted Wednesday evening on Carolina-Virginia Animal Hospital’s Facebook page stated “We want to thank you all for so much outpouring of love and condolences to our beloved Lori and her precious angel Avery.” An earlier statement read “Lori is not just an employee, she is our family and so is Avery.”
An account has been established in memory of the child “to help with memorial service expenses and other expenses that may occur during times like this,” according to the statement.
Cash or check donations are being accepted at the animal hospital in Providence, North Carolina. Checks made payable to “Justice for Avery” may be mailed to “Justice for Avery” c/o Carolina-Virginia Animal Hospital, 46 Shady Grove Road, Providence, NC 27315.
Donations also can be taken to any American National Bank and deposited into the “Justice for Avery” fund, according to the statement.
