The adoptive parents of Erica Parsons will be charged with first-degree murder, Rowan County Sheriff Kevin Auten said in a Tuesday morning news conference.

The two will also face charges of child abuse, felony concealment of death and felony obstruction of justice.

Erica Parsons, who died at 13 but was not reported missing until years later, was the victim of "homicidal violence of undetermined means," according to her autopsy report. The report said fractures in various stages of healing were found in her nose, jaw, upper right arm, nine ribs and several vertebrae.

The report said the teen may also have had an untreated infection, renal failure or poisoning.

Her adoptive father, Sandy Parsons, led authorities to her remains in Chesterfield, South Carolina, in October 2016. He and his wife Casey are in prison on fraud convictions.
