The McDowell High School NJROTC rifle team finished first at the Regional Rifle Championship recently. This victory advances them to the SC/NC NJROTC Rifle Championship in January.
The team consisted of cadets Austin Johnson, Austin Smith, Owen Cook and Andrew Rouse. Johnson was the team’s high shooter with a score of 524. He was followed closely by Smith’s 523 out of a possible 600, for a team total of 2005.
The Championship is scheduled for January 11-13 at North Augusta High School.
“We are prepared and ready to compete. We will be shooting against some very good teams but I really think we have a chance to do well. There are five teams going in with totals between 2053 and 2000,” said Johnson
Closing out a busy week, the rifle team also competed in the second annual Reindeer Games at Volunteer High School in Tennessee.
The shooters competed against some of the best teams in the country – shooting a 60-shot, all-standing match. The team of Austin Smith, Andrew Rouse, Jessica Moore and Trinity Parker finished in fifth place.
“This match was an eye-opener. Shooters from the other teams were amazing – we need to buckle down and practice if we are going to rise to the next level,” said Johnson.
