Ed Lee

Mayor Ed Lee, who oversaw a technology-driven economic boom in San Francisco that brought with it sky-high housing prices, died suddenly Dec. 12, 2017. Lee was appointed mayor by the Board of Supervisors in 2011, replacing Gavin Newsom, who was elected the state's lieutenant governor. Lee went on to win a four-year term in 2011 and was re-elected in 2015. He was 65.
