A man was sent to the hospital after witnesses say he traveled across U.S. 221 North and struck another vehicle.

Lois Westall was driving a 2012 Chevy Sonic south on U.S. 221 North when her vehicle was struck by a car she said came across several lanes in the opposite direction.

“I was in the right hand lane and he came across from the other side and hit me. My husband was in front of me and he almost hit him,” she said at the scene. “I could not have helped it.”

The other vehicle, a black Nissan Sentry, traveled almost 100 yards after hitting Westall’s vehicle and stopped after slamming into the guardrail in the southbound lane.

The identity of the driver and injuries were unknown at deadline, but the victim was transported by McDowell EMS to the hospital.

McDowell Rescue Squad, McDowell EMS, Marion Fire Department, N.C. Highway Patrol, and first responders assisted at the wreck.
