Mr. Robert "Bob" Lee Byrd Sr., 84, of the Pleasant Gardens community, passed away at his home Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2017.
A native of McDowell County, Bob was born Sept. 24, 1933, to the late Grover and Grace Erwin Byrd. He was the Senior Manufacturing Consultant for Henredon Furniture Company and served there for 53 years. Bob was a faithful, active member of Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church for over 72 years and served the Lord there in many capacities over the years. He was a former deacon, chairman of the Cemetery Committee, and was the Treasurer of the Fishers of Men Sunday school class. Bob was a member of the Joppa Lodge 401, of Old Fort, for more than 50 years and was Past Master of the Lodge. He was also a member of the Pleasant Gardens Fire Department for over 30 years and was Chief of the Department for 13 years and was one of the founding members of the McDowell Youth Activities. Bob also enjoyed fishing at the coast, woodworking and golf. He was hardworking, generous, and selfless, always willing to help when needed. He was much beloved by his family, church family, and indeed the entire Pleasant Gardens community and will be missed.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 61 1/2 years, Louise Young Byrd; three children, Bobby Byrd and wife, Diana of Pleasant Gardens, Becky Byrd Proctor and husband, Steve of Glenwood, and Roy Byrd and wife, Kim of Summerfield; three brothers, Donald Byrd and wife, Ralene of Elberton, Ga., Dean Byrd of Old Fort, and Larry Byrd and wife, Geretha of Pleasant Gardens; three sisters, Helen Byrd Hoyle and husband, Harold of Pleasant Gardens, Betty Byrd Murray of Marion, and Carolyn Byrd Thomas of Pleasant Gardens; five grandchildren, Bradley Proctor and wife, Anastasia of Indian Trail, Jordan Byrd Freeman and husband, Jeremy of West Marion, Ariana Byrd of Pleasant Gardens, and Rachel and Caleb Byrd, both of Summerfield; and one great-granddaughter, Adelaide Proctor.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, Dec. 28, at 3 p.m., at Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church, with the Rev. Josh Hayes officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m., prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
