Charles "Chuck" S. Mercell, 70, of Nebo, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2018, at Blue Ridge Hospital in Morganton.
Mr. Mercell was born in Monroe County, Mich., Feb. 7, 1947, to the late John Mercell and Emma Sanford Mercell. Mr. Mercell worked at Tilson Machine Inc. in Marion and he was recently retired. He served his country proudly during the Vietnam War in the United States Air Force. Mr. Mercell was of the Baptist faith. He was a generous, kind, and thoughtful person. He always put others first. His family says he had a great laugh, and he enjoyed telling jokes and making others smile. He was an excellent bowler and participated in many bowling tournaments and brought home many a trophy. Most importantly, he dearly loved his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Miriam Walker Mercell; an infant daughter, Brandy Mercell; a brother, Jon Mercell; and two sisters, Sue and Betty Mercell. Surviving Mr. Mercell are his wife of 17 years, Jane Mercell of the home; daughters, Lindsay (Troy) Mercell-Vars of Wichita, Kan., and Mandy Mercell McCurry of Greer, S.C.; a brother, Tom (Reita) Mercell, of Cookson, Okla.; five grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jasmine, Julienne, Joel and Justin Mercell-Vars, all of Wichita; and a host of other relatives.
The family will receive friends Friday, Feb. 2, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Kirksey Funeral Home in Marion.
A funeral service will follow at 7 p.m., with Pastor Andrew Walker officiating. Burial will take place at Cherry Springs Memorial Park, Saturday, Feb. 3, at 10 a.m., with military honors.
