BLACK MOUNTAIN

Mrs. Millie Walker Painter, 87, wife of the late James C. Painter, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2017, at Mountain Ridge Health and Rehab Ridgecrest in Black Mountain.

Mrs. Painter was born Oct. 29, 1930, in McDowell County to the late J.P. Walker and Amanda Burgin Walker.

She was a lifelong member of Cherry Springs Baptist Church in Old Fort and was awarded a 75-year faithful member plaque. She loved her church and raised all of her children at Cherry Springs Baptist Church. Mrs. Painter was a loving wife and wonderful mother and grandmother. She worked from home as a seamstress while taking care of her family. She was truly an inspiration and anchoring force for all of her family members and will be greatly missed.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, David Painter; a grandchild, Thad Carter; brothers, Young, Howard and Harold Walker; and sisters, Ruth McEntire, Lois Presnell, Gladys Tilson and Violet Davis.

Surviving Mrs. Painter are her sons, Ronald (Joan) Painter, Stephen (Susie) Painter, Johnathan Painter and Phillip Painter, all of Old Fort; daughters, Brenda (Michael) Franklin of Old Fort, Jeanne (Tom) Lipford of Hickory, and Deanna (Bill) Carter of Nebo; a sister, Lelia Gilliam of Old Fort; brothers, Raymond (Peggy) Walker, of Madison, Ga., and Kenneth (Sheena) Walker of Greensboro; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held today (Friday, Dec. 29), at 2 p.m., at Cherry Springs Baptist Church in Old Fort, with Pastor Marty Conner officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial at Cherry Springs Memorial Park will follow the service.
