Basketball season is underway at McDowell High School, and is in its second week of practices on the hardwood.

Both the Titans and Lady Titans will practice for the tenth time later today, and come this weekend, will begin their respective preseason schedules leading up to the season opener, which is just under three weeks away.

So far, both teams have had a productive first two week of workouts getting the season off and running.

The Titans and head coach Brian Franklin already had a significant percentage of the squad in the gym going back to the Oct. 30 kickoff. But his club is now at full capacity with the addition of those from the McDowell Titan football team who have traded their spikes for sneakers now that the football season has ended.

Coach Jennifer Kinninger and the Lady Titans have been at full speed since the opening day with a large contingent of players practicing on the varsity squad here at the start.

This weekend, both the boys and girls will hit the road to participate in area preseason jamborees.

The Lady Titans will make the journey down Interstate 40 to Morganton to participate in the Annual Freedom Super Saturday event. McDowell will take part in three separate scrimmages against other regional programs.

The day begins early for McDowell as they will play against the Patton Lady Panthers at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Table Rock Middle School in Glen Alpine. Patton is coached by former McDowell Lady Titan standout Autumn (Ward) Helms, who took over the Lady Panther program midway through last season. Helms was a junior varsity coach for two seasons before taking over the varsity ranks.

Later Saturday morning, the Lady Titans will take the court at Freedom High School’s main gymnasium to scrimmage Vance High School. That game is scheduled to begin at 11:50 a.m.

McDowell then finishes the day back at Table Rock Middle School against Wilkes Central at 2:20 p.m. Price of admission to Super Saturday is $5 and is good for all games being played at both Freedom and Table Rock.

Meanwhile, the Titans will head in the opposite direction, literally, on Saturday morning, participating in a preseason jamboree at the Xcel Sportsplex near Hendersonville.

The event, which is run by the Enka High School basketball program, will feature boys and girls action throughout the day.

The Titans will begin their day at 11 a.m., scrimmaging the Shelby Golden Lions. That will be followed at 12:40 p.m by Carter.

McDowell will then finish its day in a scrimmage with Asheville at 2:20 p.m.

Next Wednesday, both McDowell teams will be in action again. The Titans will scrimmage Patton in the final preseason tune-up, while the Lady Titans will host a three-team scrimmage with Avery and Hibriten (6 p.m start).

The regular season opener for McDowell is at Titan Gym on Tuesday, Nov. 28, against East Burke.
