The McDowell Lady Titans have had trouble this season getting off to the blistering starts that have been a calling card for Lady Titan hoops for decades.

But Friday night’s home game against the Fred T. Foard Tigers featured a beginning that was vintage McDowell.

The Lady Titans scored the game’s first 15 points and never looked back en route to a 78-45 win. McDowell (5-4) built a 34-16 halftime lead and then outscored the Tigers (1-9) 44-29 in the second half as the lead grew throughout.

The 78-point output was far and away a season high for the Lady Titans, who shot 47 percent from the field and put three players in double figures. The Lady Titans shared the ball well, notching 21 assists on 31 made field goals. They also out-rebounded Foard 45-32 overall and 18-13 offensively. Throw in 28 Tiger turnovers, and you have the makings of a blowout.

Post Lily McKinney had a huge night, scoring a game-high 18 points on 9-of-10 field-goal shooting to go with 11 rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocked shots.

Guard Dezi Williams had 12 points, five assists and three steals, and post Makayla Brewer tossed in 11 points and snagged eight rebounds.

Brewer scored five points and McKinney four in the decisive opening flurry. Emma Banks’ bucket off a McKinney assist capped the rally with McDowell ahead 15-0 at the 2-minute mark. Meanwhile, Foard missed its first nine shots and committed 10 first-quarter turnovers.

The Tigers scored their first points on a 3-pointer by Cameron Ekonomon (14 points, 4-of-5 3-pointers) with 20 seconds remaining in the first period. By then, the damage had been done.

McDowell outscored Foard 19-13 in the second quarter, getting a 3-pointer each from Hayley Creasman (8 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals), Zoe Miller and Silese Carson.

McDowell built on its 18-point halftime lead with a 15-13 third quarter featuring eight points from McKinney.

The Lady Titans outscored Foard 29-16 in the fourth quarter, with nine different McDowell players scoring in the period.

The Lady Titans open play in the Freedom Christmas Invitational next Wednesday, Dec. 27. McDowell plays Asheville Christian Academy at 4 p.m. in the first round.
