The last week of the regular season is here and the McDowell Lady Titans volleyball team still has some very important things to play for.

The Lady Titans kicked off the home stretch with a three-game sweep of West Caldwell Tuesday evening in Gamewell.

McDowell (6-13 overall, 3-10 NW 3A/4A) earns the season sweep of a winless West Caldwell squad (0-19, 0-13) and keeps alive the slim hopes of a state playoff berth.

Both the Lady Titans and South Caldwell, the split league’s only two 4A members, share a 3-10 mark in conference play going into the finale on Thursday. The 4A squad with the best league mark will earn the classification’s automatic bid in the state volleyball playoffs.

The Lady Titans made quick work of West, disposing of them easily by scores of 25-15, 23-13 and 25-15. Outside hitters Lily McKinney (7 digs, 6 assists) and Taylor Buchanan (3 aces) led the charge with nine kills each. Lauren Hudgins added eight kills.

Makenna Parkins had three kills, Eavan Smith and Zoe Vance (3 aces) netted a kill each. Bailey Elliott (6 digs, 4 aces, 1 kill) offered 21 assists and Parker Brown accumulated 17 digs.

Reserves Madison Ogle (1 ace, 1 dig), Kirsten Melvin (2 digs, 1 assist), Nicole Gallion (3 assists) and Laynie Hudgins (3 digs, 1 assist) also contributed for the Lady Titans.

McDowell finishes out the regular season on Thursday at Freedom while South Caldwell is on the road at Alexander Central. If both 4A squads have the same record after Thursday, a tiebreaker may be used at a neutral site to determine the state playoff bid. McDowell and South Caldwell split matches head-to-head.
