After two weeks of nearly continuous washouts, the McDowell Lady Titans golf team and the rest of the Northwestern Conference finally got to swing the sticks.

The Lady Titans placed second behind a strong Hickory club at South Caldwell’s Orchard Hills Golf Course Thursday afternoon. McDowell shot 147, nine strokes behind Hickory’s 136.

Freedom placed third with a 157, and was followed by South Caldwell (159), Alexander Central (161) and Watauga (201). St. Stephens entered only two golfers, one short of the three needed to enter a team score.

Individually, Tyler Price paced the Lady Titans a 44, which was good enough for third place overall. McKenzie Hartman shot 50, placing sixth overall. Andrea Abernathy shot 53 and ended up in a three-way tie for ninth.

Ansley Lance was one shot in back of Abernathy with a 54, and Kendell Brooks carded a 60. All five Lady Titans placed among the top 16 in the 31-player field.

Hickory’s Anna McDonald was medalist with a 36. Freedom’s Christina Fisher shot 42 to finish second.

Next up is another NWC 4A/3A match at Catawba Springs (Hickory and St. Stephens) next Tuesday (3:30).
