RUTHERFORDTON – The Palace Court was a courteous place for the McDowell Lady Titans on Tuesday night.
With three players in double figures and a solid effort on the defensive end, McDowell picked up its second win of the season, beating the R-S Central Hilltoppers 54-35.
With the exception of a brief 20-second span late in the first quarter, McDowell (2-1) led the entire way, using its pressure defense to force the Hilltoppers into 21 turnovers.
Ahead 13-12 after one quarter, McDowell scored the first eight points of the second to extend its lead into double figures and never looked back.
Hayley Creasman started it off with two free throws at the 7:40 mark when R-S Central was charged a technical foul for having six players on the court. Makayla Brewer then scored inside on the next possession. Creasman made it 19-12 on two more three throws at the 6:58 mark. Dezi Williams then capped off the run with a transition layup.
That run helped propel the Lady Titans to a 28-16 halftime lead and a 41-28 edge after three quarters.
McDowell’s 11-1 surge to start the fourth quarter put the game away.
Brewer (5 rebounds) led McDowell with 14 points. Williams sank a pair of 3s and was active on defense, adding 12 points, five steals, three assists and three rebounds. Creasman was the final Lady Titan in double figures with 11 points.
Candace Cooper tallied six points. Guards Zoe Miller and Taylor Buchanan provided four points each off the bench.
Megan Zullo scored two points and Lily McKinney (7 rebounds, 3 assists) had one point.
R-S Central (3-3), playing without the services of injured point guard and leading scorer Jada Logan, was carried by guard Aliyah Whiteside with 17 points.
McDowell will conclude its three-game road trip tonight (Thursday) in a rematch against East Burke in Icard. The Lady Titans are looking for some revenge after losing at home to the Lady Cavs 58-35 just nine days ago.
