The McDowell Lady Titans thought their tennis season had come to an end after the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference tournament, but top seed Paige Shaw wasn’t quite finished.
Shaw earned a spot in the West Regional tournament at Ardry Kell High in Charlotte last Friday, and then left no doubt she belonged in the postseason with a win in her first-round match.
Shaw defeated Alena Opoku of West Meck 8-6, 6-1 in the opening round, which made her one of the West region’s final eight players. In the second round, Shaw ran into defending state champion Jenna Thompson of South Meck, and fell 6-0, 6-0.
The Lady Titans’ top seed, Shaw made it to the playoffs by winning her first-round match in the conference tourney, making her the second-seeded 4A player in the league and qualifying her for a playoff berth.
