Both of McDowell High’s junior varsity basketball teams left Titan Gym with hard-earned victories Friday against Watauga.
In junior varsity girls action, a total of 11 players scored in a 43-27 win by the Lady Titan jayvees over the Lady Pioneers. Sophomore Makenna Parkins was the lone player in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Freshmen Naliyah Boyce chipped in with six points. Mariah Hunt and Alana Stephenson had five points each.
Leila Bragg and Daisy Rice scored three points each for McDowell and Tayla Wood, along with Katie Baker, Madi Smith and Clementine Miller, finished with two points apiece.
McDowell 61, Watauga 50 (jayvee boys)
It took until the fourth quarter, but the McDowell Titans finally gave themselves a little margin of error to work with as they pulled away from the Watauga Pioneers 61-50 Friday afternoon.
McDowell entered the fourth quarter with a slim, five-point margin and made it stand as the Pioneers made it a one-possession game on multiple occasions in the final stanza.
The Titans did a lot of their damage in the interior. Freshman Trent Lewis finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. Dequan Boyce and sophomore Qualique Garner added 10 points and seven rebounds each to give McDowell three players in double figures.
Tyler Rector chipped in nine points, Richard Handy netted five points. Colby Effler (5 assists, 5 rebounds) finished with four points and Gavin Davis, along with Michael Queen and Johnathan Ramirez, finished with two points apiece.
McDowell will play its final home game of the season Tuesday against Alexander Central (4 p.m. jayvee girls).
