The McDowell Titans junior varsity basketball team had a slow beginning to Friday afternoon’s contest against West Caldwell but it didn’t last that way.
A very strong surge in the second half did the Warriors in as McDowell cruised away to 70-40 win.
A total of 13 McDowell players scored in the game with a pair that came up in double figures. Freshman Trent Lewis scored 12 points and gathered 12 rebounds to lead the charge. Qualique Garner added 11 points to the mix.
Tyler Rector and Seth Harrison had eight points each and Jalen Robbins scored six points. Michael Queen netted four points off the bench, Colby Effler scored three points and Dequan Boyce along with Richard Handy (6 rebounds, 4 assists), Johnathan Ramirez, Dylan Aldridge and Dezmond Loftis finished with two points apiece.
McDowell was squared even with West Caldwell 13-13 after one quarter and still had only a modest 31-22 advantage going into halftime. It was in the second half where the Titans dominated things, outscoring the Warriors 39-18.
McDowell returns to action on Tuesday hosting rival Freedom (4 p.m. jayvee girls start).
