Down two starters, the McDowell Titan wrestling team dropped its first dual loss of the season Tuesday night, losing to West Henderson in the first match of a quad.

McDowell (8-1) fell to the host team 46-25 in the opener. Starters Channing Watson (hip) and Tice Edwards (groin) missed the match, and the Titans lost some close ones in a few spots.

“I felt like we weren’t ready to wrestle,” said McDowell head coach Tim Hutchins. “We didn’t wrestle up to our potential, and West Henderson is a much-improved team.”

Despite the loss, the Titans bounced back to hammer Erwin 66-18 and then beat Brevard 42-31.

Four McDowell grapplers went 3-0 in the quad.

Tobey Finn made weight at 113 for the first time this season and won all three of his bouts. Alldyn Conley (120 pounds), Toney McGee (126) and Jacob Phillips (152) also went undefeated.

Connor Good (160), Josh Morgan (182) and Aaron Duncan (285) all posted 2-1 records.

Calvin Stevenson (106), Donte Quitman (132), Daniel Maynor (138), Preston Dennison (145), Aaron Buchanan (170) and Aamon Haynes (195) all went 1-2.

McDowell returns to West Henderson Friday for the Falcon Frenzy Invitational. The varsity tournament begins Friday and the junior varsity team will join the Titans Saturday.
