For the second time in a matter of a few days, the McDowell Titans junior varsity basketball team let a sizeable advantage dwindle away.

Unlike Tuesday’s contest, McDowell came through with a clutch play to preserve a 44-42 win at home against Fred T. Foard.

After squandering a nine-point second half lead to the Tigers, McDowell found itself in the position of having their contest decided on the final possession.

With the game tied 40-40, Foard decided to stall offensively in the final minute of regulation. It was the effort of freshman Dequan Boyce (4 points, 3 rebounds) that made the difference. Boyce stole a pass near mid court and hit a game winning layup in transition with 15 seconds left.

Trent Lewis recorded a game-high 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Titans. Gavin Davis (4 rebounds) had 10 points and Seth Edwards added seven points.

Richard Handy (5 rebounds, 3 assists) netted three points and Johnathan Ramirez along with Jalen Robbins finished with two points each.

McDowell (5-2) will be taking some time off during Christmas break. Both the Titans and Lady Titan jayvees return to play Wednesday, Jan. 3 at Watauga.
