Friday the 13th was anything but unlucky for the McDowell Titans tennis team, who scored a 5-4 win on the road against the R-S Central Hilltoppers in non-conference play.
The Titans (3-7 overall, 0-5 Northwestern 3A/4A Conference) did it with a couple of key victories in doubles matches.
McDowell won the top three individual seeds, but dropped the final three. In doubles, the Titans captured the final two matches for the hard-fought win.
Top seed Cameron Crater had no trouble at all with Ben Kersey, dispatching the Hilltoppers’ No. 1 seed 6-0, 6-1. At No. 2, Chris Boyette handled Central’s Ethan Rector easily, winning 6-0, 6-2. And at No. 3, Tyler Wilson won a tight one, beating Conner Settlemyre in a tiebreaker. 6-3, 1-6, 10-6).
But R-S Central took the next three seeds.
Shivam Patel defeated Isaac Smith 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4; Will Scofield beat Cha Vang 6-1, 6-3 at the fifth seed; and Kishan Patel took out Trey Beverly 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6.
In doubles, Crater and Smith fell 9-7 to Kersey and Rector.
But Wilson and Boyette whipped Settlemyre and Shivam Patel 8-3. In No. 3 doubles, Beverly and Thomas Moomaw beat Scofield and Kishan Patel 8-2.
The Titans round out the regular season this week. McDowell is at West Caldwell today (Tuesday). The Titans host Freedom Wednesday in the finale.
