The McDowell Titans, coming off back-to-back Northwestern 3A/4A victories, faced a winless but better-than-their-record non-conference team at home in the final game before Christmas.

Recipe for disaster, right?

Not with these cats.

The Titans (8-1) came out with their usual high intensity and routed the Fred T. Foard Tigers 80-50 Friday at Titan Gym. Foard (0-10) hung with the Titans for a quarter, but a 31-13 second period turned the game into a blowout.

McDowell shot a sweltering 54 percent from the field and put four players in double figures. Meanwhile, the Tigers couldn’t overcome 31-percent shooting and 24 turnovers.

Titans point guard Kevin Silver (4 rebounds) scored 17 of his game-high 25 points in the first half, and finished 5-of-11 from 3-point range and 9-of-15 from the field. Wing Skyler McKinney came oh-so-close to a triple-double with 18 points, 13 rebounds, eight assists and two steals.

Dylan McRary provided a spark off the bench and scored all 12 of his points in the second quarter. Post Travis Corpening added 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting.

“I was really proud of the way they played,” said Titans head coach Brian Franklin. “This group really loves to play, and you don’t have to work too hard getting them excited about a game. Tonight was one of those where we didn’t have school, the schedules were off and we were playing earlier than usual. And we were playing a team that was 0-9 but is a lot better than their record shows. It could have been one of those that’s a let-down.

“But our kids were ready to go from the very beginning. I thought our intensity was outstanding and we were really sharp.”

The Tigers indeed looked better than their record in the first quarter when they stayed within an 18-16 deficit.

But a fast, 12-3 run to start the second quarter turned the game. McKinney buried a 3-pointer off a McRary assist 12 seconds into the quarter to begin the spurt.

J.C. Olivo added a bucket after a steal and assist from McRary. Silver had a 3-pointer, and McRary added a pair of baskets. Foard did manage to get a 3-pointer from Nash Whitener during the rally, but it wasn’t enough.

By the 4:55 mark, the Titans led 30-19. Foard pulled within single digits only once moments later, and then never again the rest of the way.

McDowell was up 49-29 at the break and 62-41 after three quarters. The Titans outscored Foard 18-9 in the fourth quarter.

Franklin said a number of players contributed heavily in the win.

“Kevin was outstanding offensively,” said Franklin. “He really did some great things. I thought McRary came in and helped us at the point of the (half-court zone trap) defense and helped change the game.

“And then Skyler just did what he does. It seems like every game here lately, he’s just always a couple assists shy of a triple-double. What an outstanding player he is. I thought Antoine did some good things. His shots weren’t falling tonight, but he was still taking great shots, and he found other ways to help us.”

Caleb Schmidt led Foard with 16 points. Reserve post Cameron Skeens tossed in 10 and pulled a team-high eight boards.

McDowell will compete in the Freedom Christmas Invitational next week. The Titans face Wilkes Central in the first round at 2:30 Wednesday, Dec. 27.
