The winter sports season in the Foothills Conference is off and running. Here is recap of the basketball games that took place this week:
Liberty 24, East McDowell 19 (girls basketball)
The East McDowell Lady Trojans faced their toughest challenge so far on the season Thursday afternoon.
A second-half surge by the Liberty Lady Knights was just enough for them to overcome a slow beginning as they slid past East McDowell 24-19.
No East McDowell player scored in double figures but Savannah Banks along with Kelsy McPeters had six points each in the losing effort.
East McDowell 37, Walter Johnson 33 (girls basketball)
On Monday, the East McDowell Lady Trojans earned a hard-fought road win, beating Walter Johnson 37-33.
Savannah Banks led the way with 17 points. Kelsy McPeters added eight points. Sydney Strode netted five points. Emily Alfaro chipped in three points and Peyton McPeters along with Riley Holland scored two points each.
Liberty 64, East McDowell 25 (boys basketball)
The East McDowell Trojans had a rough go of it on Thursday, losing 64-25 to Liberty at Trojan Gym.
The Knights opened the game with a decisive 19-0 run and were never challenged at any point of the game.
Josh Smith scored a team-high 10 points for the Trojans. Zavian Bianchini added nine points and Jandon Robbins scored four points.
Mason Lamb, Michael Ellis and Alejandro Campos scored two points apiece and Chase Coley had one point.
East Burke 43, West McDowell 24 (girls basketball)
West McDowell’s lone basketball game of the week took place on Monday. The Lady Spartans, despite a strong effort, were overcome by East Burke 43-24 at Spartan Gym.
The contest was as close as three points during the third quarter before a 16-5 run by the Lady Raiders seized control.
Tayla Carson (2 assists) scored eight points. Gracie Rice (6 rebounds, 3 assists) netted six points and Abby McMahan (5 rebounds) scored four points.
Marianna Carson (10 rebounds), Aubrey Harris and Landry Kazee finished with two points apiece.
East Burke 66, West McDowell 54 (boys basketball)
A slow first quarter set the tone in Monday’s boys contest as West McDowell was held off by East Burke Middle School 66-54.
The Raiders opened the game with a 10-1 run and never had the margin get any closer the rest of the way.
Isaiah Joyner (4 rebounds, 3 assists) scored a team-high 15 points for West McDowell. Jeremiah Ellis (4 rebounds) added six points and Seth Webb, Ty Smith (2 rebounds) along with Gabe Marsh chipped in with five points apiece.
Grayson Blackwelder (8 rebounds) and Devyn Cash finished with four points each. Coda Johnson and Jeryah Cash scored three points each and Ethan Hensley along with Braden Beck had two points each.
