The West McDowell Lady Spartans earned a season sweep of cross-town rival East McDowell on Tuesday afternoon with a 7-2 victory at Spartan Field.
West (5-0 Foothills Conference) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first three innings of play and was able to hold East McDowell (4-2) at arm’s length the rest of the way.
Three of those runs came in the third inning. Payton Wills started the frame with a walk. Then, consecutive RBI hits by Ryleigh Ogle and Gracie Rice helped push the Lady Spartan lead to 4-0 at the time.
The Lady Trojans got on the scoreboard in the fourth, scoring a pair of runs to get back within a two-run margin. Dakota Melancon and Bethany Nichols both singled with one out. Lily Williams then produced a two-run double to cut the lead in half.
West answered later on. With it still at 4-2, the Lady Spartans separated themselves from the competition by pushing across three big runs in the sixth inning, getting hits from Ogle (2-for-4) and leadoff hitter Ella Trimnal (2-for-4).
Carley Arrowood and Hayley Lawing also had one hit each in the contest.
Williams finished with two hits for East McDowell along with a hit apiece for Melancon, Nichols and Emily Crisp.
