Note: "Tonight" in the story refers to Friday.

Get the scoreboard warmed up. This one could get crazy.

Fans looking for offensive fireworks could likely do a lot worse than attending the McDowell Titans’ game against the West Caldwell Warriors tonight at Titan Stadium (7:30 kickoff).

That’s because both teams have been pretty good offensively – and not very good at all on defense.

The Warriors (6-3 overall, 3-2 Northwestern 3A/4A Conference) come into tonight’s game allowing an average of 46.2 points per contest in league play. Meanwhile, the Titans (1-8, 0-5) are giving up 43.4 per game in the NWC. Both squads are surrendering nearly 480 yards per game in five conference outings.

The biggest difference between the two clubs has been West Caldwell’s ability to answer all those points. That was especially evident last week.

The Titans are coming off a 61-17 loss at Watauga. It was the seventh defeat in a row for McDowell. The Titans stayed in the game for a little more than a quarter, but Watauga built a 27-3 halftime lead and then scored 28 points in a six-and-a-half minute span of the third quarter to break open the game completely.

Meanwhile, West Caldwell was busy pulling off a stunner, edging Freedom 44-42 on a touchdown with 18 seconds left. That outcome helped forge a four-team logjam (Freedom, Watauga, West Caldwell, Hickory) in second place behind league leaders Alexander Central (5-0, 9-0).

Highlights were few and far between for the Titans in Boone last Friday, but senior quarterback Ben Ballew managed to eclipse a couple of historic milestones. Ballew went 12-of-23 passing for exactly 100 yards, becoming the third MHS quarterback with a pair of 1,000-yard passing seasons.

Ballew (92-of-157, 1,040 yards, 10 TDs, 6 INTs) also moved into third place all-time in passing yards. Ballew (228-of-406, 2,378 yards, 19 TDs, 27 INTs) trails only Casey Ray (4,385 yards) and Jason Van Dyke (3,336) on the all-time list. In addition, the 100-yard game was Ballew’s 12th, and he now trails only Ray (22) and Van Dyke (14) in that category as well.

Ballew has spread the wealth around in McDowell’s spread offense this season; four different receivers have at least 200 yards, including Andruw Randolph (308), Dakota Effler (291), Seth Phillips (214) and Trevor Pearson (208).

Tailback J.C. Olivo has snagged 14 passes for 151 yards and a score, and leads the team in rushing with 670 yards and four TDs on 135 carries. Adam Randolph has rushed for 283 yards and thrown for 223. Randolph has thrown three touchdown passes, run for another two scores, and caught two TD passes.

Outside linebacker Andrew Davis continues to lead the club in tackles with 86. Defensive back Austin Prince has 57 tackles, and nose guard Ricky Amador (36 tackles) has made a team-leading seven tackles for loss. Linebacker Trey Beverly (41 tackles) leads the Titans in sacks with three.

Like the Titans, the Warriors feature a handful of offensive weapons, but none is more dangerous than senior running back Taye Dula, arguably the conference’s best back. Dula (6-0, 190), who possesses a lethal combination of speed and power, leads the league in rushing by a huge margin. He has run for 1,626 yards and 21 touchdowns on 149 carries – an average of nearly 11 yards per attempt. He also averages almost 38 yards per kickoff return. Dula was especially effective last week against Freedom, rushing for 308 yards and four touchdowns on 34 carries.

Senior quarterback Kaleb Dula (5-10, 140) is 90-of-127 passing for 1,052 yards and 13 scores with just four interceptions. His favorite target is senior wide receiver Elijah Brooks (5-7, 140), who has 35 catches for 479 yards and eight TDs.

On defense, middle linebacker Will Gause (6-0, 190) leads the team with 92 tackles, five tackles for loss and 4.5 quarterback sacks. Taye Dula plays linebacker as well, and has made 58 stops, second on the team to Gause.

There is little familiarity between the two clubs; they haven’t played each other in a generation. The Titans and Warriors have split six all-time meetings, with McDowell winning the last three. The most recent one, however, was a 26-0 MHS win back in 1988.

After tonight, the Titans have only one game remaining, a date with traditional rivals Freedom next Friday at home.
