Local and state agencies were on scene to assess evacuation and ground testing

McDowell County Emergency Management was notified by the Westwood Chateau HOA of safety concerns related to a possible sinkhole formation under the apartment complex in Marion. A private geotechnical engineer has performed various underground tests and determined that residents living in this complex need to be immediately relocated due to the potential of sinkhole formation. The engineer deemed the complex as a high threat to the safety of the residents.

Local and state officials are currently on scene assisting citizens who are affected by this incident. The apartments are located behind Lady Marian Plaza where a sinkhole appeared last week.

A shelter has been established at First Baptist Church in Marion, located at 99 North Main Street. This is a developing story.
