A Spruce Pine driver was pronounced dead at the scene of an early morning collision involving a Marion police vehicle, according to reports.

At approximately 6:50 a.m. Wednesday morning, emergency units and law enforcement responded to US 221 North at Pitts Station Road after receiving reports of a motor vehicle collision involving a police vehicle.

According to Trooper Michael Childres of the NC Highway Patrol, a Marion Police Department vehicle – driven by Cpl. Christian Wyatt and occupied by Officer Matthew Huggins and K-9 Marsoc – were traveling northbound on 221 to attend training in Avery County when the vehicle collided with a GMC Sonoma – driven by 48-year-old David Christopher Ollis of Spruce Pine – that was turning left from 221 South onto Pitts Station Road.

Ollis was pronounced dead at the scene upon arrival of paramedics, while Wyatt and Huggins were taken to Mission Hospital McDowell and later released.

Marsoc, who was present in the vehicle, was taken to the veterinarian's office where the canine is said to have been okay following the collision, according to authorities.

The collision is still under investigation by NCSHP, according to Childres.

Ashford-North Cove Fire Department, McDowell EMS, McDowell Emergency Management, McDowell County Sheriff’s Office and NCSHP responded to the wreck, according to Emergency Services Director William Kehler.
