A Marion felon was arrested and charged after deputies found him with a stolen handgun and served him with a warrant for a stolen motorcycle, authorities said Monday.

Deputy David Jones of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged Nicholas Cage Cordell, 23, of 292 Memorial Park Road in Marion, with possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Cordell was also served with an outstanding warrant for possession of a stolen vehicle.

At 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, Jones responded to Grants Mountain Road in reference to shots being fired.

While there, Jones stopped a vehicle that had attempted to flee from him. Cordell was the passenger in the car.

A subsequent search turned up a handgun that had been reported stolen from Buncombe County.

In the possession of a stolen vehicle case, Robert Brendle, of Marion, reported on Nov. 13, 2017, that someone stole a 2001 Kawsaki motorcycle from Mudcut Road in Glenwood.

The motorcycle was later located after Cordell was in a pursuit with the Burke County Sheriff’s Office. Cordell had been charged but had not been located until Sept. 29.

According to NC Department of Public Safety records, Cordell has a criminal history as early as 2012 including charges of felony breaking and entering, larceny, larceny of firearms and shoplifting.

Cordell’s bond was set at $40,000.
