A McDowell High School student was charged after allegedly setting fire to a trash can in the restroom, authorities said Friday.

Deputy Jason Cook of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged Taylor Cole Garland, 16, address listed as Ellis Street in Marion with burning personal property.

Shortly before 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 30, Cook, who is the school resource officer at McDowell High, received information that someone set a trash can on fire in the restroom. Further investigation led to the 16-year-old student.

Damage to the property was estimated at $50.

Cook’s bond was set at $500.
