Police: Driver dies following collision in Marion

Emergency units and law enforcement respond to a motor vehicle collision on Wednesday morning

A driver taken into ICU following a wreck last week has died, according to reports.

Mary Pitman Mace, 79, of Marion succumbed to her injuries sustained from a motor vehicle collision on Wednesday morning at the intersection of U.S. 70 West and North Main Street in Marion.

Preliminary investigation into the crash revealed that at 8:52 a.m. that morning, Mace had been traveling on U.S. 70 West in a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis, attempting to go straight across into the shopping center located at 2080 North Main Street. At the same time, 42-year-old Millard James Mayfield of Morganton was traveling north on Main Street through the intersection in a 1988 Chevrolet truck.

Witnesses on the scene reported that Mace did not stop for the red light displayed in her direction and traveled into the intersection where she collided with Mayfield’s vehicle. He was later transported to Mission Hospital McDowell, where he was treated and released for minor injuries.

McDowell EMS responded to the scene and transported Mace to Mission Hospital in Asheville, where she remained in the Intensive Care Unit in serious but stable condition until her death was publicly confirmed on Monday afternoon.

Investigation into this crash continues, however no charges have be filed at this time, according to the Marion Police Department.
