An Old Fort man was arrested and charged after a relative accused him of breaking into her car and stealing items from her purse, authorities said Thursday.
Detective Billie Brown of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged David Christopher Lawing, 29, of 20 Sally Knupp Way in Old Fort, with breaking and entering, larceny, larceny of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon.
At 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 21, Lottie Washburn, of Old Fort, reported that, while she was visiting with relatives at 20 Sally Knupp Way, $525 worth of items – a handgun, credit cards and jewelry – were stolen from her purse, which was locked inside her vehicle.
An investigation led to Lawing, who is related to the victim and was at the house at the time of the theft.
These latest charges against Lawing are subsequent to another Sheriff’s Office case, in which he was accused of trespassing onto an old dairy farm at 308 Honey Brook Lane in Old Fort on Nov. 17, damaging $3,000 worth of electrical wiring and a breaker box on the property and stealing a $160 battery from a forklift.
On the recent charges, Lawing’s bond was set at $15,000.
