McDowell County eighth-graders got a first-hand lesson about how to be safe at the McDowell 4-H Safety Field Day held every year at the Ag Barn. Students listened to different sessions from the Marion Fire Department, McDowell Rescue Squad, McDowell EMS, Wildlife Resources Commission, Marion Police Department, McDowell County Sheriff’s Office, Rutherford Electric and the Carolina West Shooting Club. “They come in and teach hands-on techniques and talk to the eighth graders about basic safety. We use it also as a chance for a career fair to show students what they should start studying if they are interested in any of these careers. The agencies demonstrate things they may run into in their everyday lives,” said N.C. Cooperative Extension Agent Chad Ray. Rescue tools, fire safety, food safety, animal safety and gun safety were just a few of the topics covered at the event. For more pictures, visit www.mcdowellnews.com.
