On Thursday, people filled the lawn of the McDowell County Courthouse for the local observance of the National Day of Prayer. Coordinator Wendy Potter Baker said the observance is non-denominational and all churches in McDowell were invited to participate. The local observance of the National Day of Prayer attracts numerous people, both young and old, to the McDowell County Courthouse on the first Thursday of May. As in previous years, various local leaders stood in front of the courthouse and led prayers for various concerns. They prayed for the military, the news media, teachers and the education system, churches, families and other needs, both local and national. The nationwide theme for this year was “Love One Another” and is taken from John 13:34.
