McDowell High band students are gaining recognition at national and regional levels.

Eleventh-grader Grant Widmann has been selected for the American School Band Directors Association National Honor Band. He will traveling to St. Augustine, Fla., in June 23-26 to perform with the top students from around the country under the direction of international composer and conductor Brian Balmages.

Widmann applied for the national honor band by submitting a video audition in October. Video submissions were reviewed by American School Band Directors Association members and the top students were selected. Widmann is one of only two tenor saxophonists selected to participate in the band.

This is the first time that McDowell High School band has had a student recognized for their talent at the national level.

Also, McDowell High School had three students selected for North Carolina Western District Honors Band. These students auditioned last week at Tuscola High School against students across Western NC and were selected as the top in the district. Tenth-grader Jacob Bullman (flute) and ninth-graders, Caroline Lanier (French horn) and Selena Vargas (mallets) earned the honors.
